Why do many of us settle in life way too soon and don’t even try to pursue our dreams.
From Dreamer to Doer.
It’s Sunday, and Sundays are a perfect time for some reflection and planning.
So let’s investigate why do many of us settle in life way too soon and don’t even try to pursue our dreams.
Here are three main reasons people don’t try to go after their dreams.
1. Unclear direction or purpose.
It never ceases to amaze me how often people don’t know what they really want in life.
If you aim at nothing, you get nothing.
Self-reflection to the rescue.
To even have a chance of finding your direction, you need some time to stop, reflect, and test things.
Don’t forget to balance thinking with gaining experience.
Optimize for fast feedback loops to avoid overthinking and procrastination.
2. Future discounting.
What is future discounting?
It’s a lack of certainty towards future gains mixed with impatience.
It’s the tendency to place a higher value on immediate rewards and undervalue the benefits of future rewards.
Stop just reacting and start creating.
People will give up greater future benefits for smaller, more immediate rewards.
We live in a reactive mode and become opportunistic, not creative.
Impulsiveness messes up with perseverance and long-term goals.
Change it or wave goodbye to your dreams.
3. Low self-efficacy and self-doubt.
Many people do not believe it’s possible -for them- to successfully complete tasks and reach their goals.
Why bother if you don’t really believe you can make it?
It affects motivation, goal setting, and performance, as well as the level of effort an individual puts into a task.
How to increase your self-efficacy?
By collecting evidence that you can do it, not by changing mantras that you can.
Start small, and get as many easy wins (pick some low-hanging fruit) to boost your confidence.
Want to improve the odds of your dreams coming true?
1. Get clear on what you want, and make sure it’s aligned with your values.
2. Stop only reacting and start creating.
3. Work on building your self-efficacy.
Either way, have an awesome Sunday!
